Spiritual Spring Cleaning by Kristin Johnson

As our homes get refreshed, cleaned, and covered in pastels and florals this spring, let us not forget to refresh and make pretty the space where God dwells-our bodies, our souls.

The compartment made up of our mind, intellect, emotions and will. It is there where we feel the longing of the Holy Spirit’s whisper.

Telling us to get up, make ready, a new season is here.

I’ve been feeling that longing in this season of my life. A season where another thing has been added to my list of daily to-dos.

This spring, as I make my checklist of window cleaning, decluttering, and planting, I want to start like an opened window in spring to air-out the house and open my heart to where God is resting in me. It is totally in His arms of course; and in his arms I find a rest that no bubble bath, lazy afternoon nap, nor massage can give me.

I find spiritual rest in Him.

A rest that allows me to jump up in excitement because I get another day to pray, worship and serve Him. A rest that keeps me going physically, mentally, and emotionally no matter how I’m feeling.

That’s the rest, the grace, the mercy he gives brand new each morning, each season. That’s the second chance He provides over and over. Just like spring, and every other season that rolls around giving us another opportunity to start new.

He…makes… all… things…new. I’m so glad about that!

Here are a few things I’ll be doing this spring to “clean up” spiritually and allow God to renew me and my household:

Decluttering (capturing) My Thoughts: 2 Corinthians 10:5

No longer will I allow my thoughts to dictate my actions or my feelings. God has called me to think on things that are praiseworthy, kind, and obedient so my actions and reactions are always in love.

Clearing Out Time Wasters: Ephesians 5:16-17

Facebook, Instagram, and binge-watching Netflix has taken up more time than I spend with the Lord. Yikes! I want to make the most of my time and not be foolish with it. God has blessed me with so much to do. Sometimes we can take that for granted.

Planting Words of Wisdom in My Children: Deuteronomy 6:5-9

With my thoughts decluttered and clearing out time wasters, I’ll have more time to plant roots of God’s word throughout the day into my daughters. Not just a bedtime prayer or an impromptu chat; but an intentional meaningful conversation about who God is. One on one time, helping them to continue to grow in the Lord and becoming strong women of God that will one day long for His rest.

This season will call for diligence and making time for what is important.

1 Corinthians 15:8.

God has called us to be diligent, steadfast, abounding in the work He has given us; not idlers of His time.

Whether its parenting, working outside or inside the home, homeschooling, volunteering or wherever God has called us in this season-no matter what it is.

He has blessed us with things to do, work to be done; and we must honor him with our work.

I’m not saying you won’t be tired, have days for a heart-check and we may not achieve all we want to do this spring when it comes to our home goals or spiritual goals; but I’m so glad that I don’t have to be perfect, because He already has that covered.

For His Glory,

Kristin J.
